What

Kristy Gorman’s new exhibition Arbitare is named after the Italian design magazine founded in 1961 by Piera Peroni. Gorman has often found herself absorbed in the architecture sections of libraries she has frequented. In 2018 her curiosity was rewarded when she was given a series of issues of Arbitare dating from the 1980s that were being deaccessioned by the library of the design school where she teaches. Gorman was drawn to the magazine’s photographs and began assembling a catalogue of spatial shards clipped from its pages — passages of unusual light and gradation, negative spaces, blurry edges and shadowy reflective sides of objects.

Gorman has previously used collage as a practical drawing method, often attaching pieces of coloured paper to her paintings in order to work out how to complete them. The Arbitare shards gave new impetus to the collage process. The decision to assemble the resulting agglomerations in the form of a concertina was inspired by an object that has lurked in Gorman’s studio since she first visited Europe in the mid 1990s — a souvenir of Giotto’s 28 frescoes in the Basilica di San Francesco, Assisi. The repetitive folded form of the concertina echoes the spatial play apparent in her paintings — and connects with her longstanding interest in the artist’s book.

Kristy Gorman was born in Tapanui in 1969 and has exhibited her work regularly since graduating from the University of Canterbury School of Fine Arts in 1992. In 1995 Gorman’s work was included in A Very Peculiar Practice: Aspects of Recent New Zealand Painting, curated by Allan Smith for City Gallery, Wellington. In 1996 she was Govett-Brewster Art Gallery Artist in Residence. In 2001 she received the Olivia Spencer Bower Foundation Award. Her work is represented in public and private collections throughout New Zealand. Arbitare is Gorman’s first exhibition at Anna Miles Gallery. The limited edition concertina Arbitare will be available from the exhibition.
